Why Desperation?

Why is it called, Desperation Church ?

It doesn't sound like a typical church name ... on purpose. We really want to connect with people who have no interest in "church" by society's definition. There are plenty of churches for "normal people" and we think we have a unique calling to reach out to our otherwise unreached friends. Our name is integral to that process. Whether outcast by society, or by the church itself, many who come can identify with the name "Desperation Church" since they have found themselves to be 'desperate' at one time or another. More important to us, however, the name implies that being people of faith does not mean we are better than anyone else.

We know many people think Christians are out to cast judgment on them. Our name makes it clear that we aren't about that. We are just painfully aware of our need for God,... as those that are desperate. We understand that the word 'desperate' may have some negative ideas attached to it. But our thought is that the Lord is calling us to passionately pursue Him like nothing else in our lives. For far too long we've filled the emptiness and the longings of our hearts with things that do not satisfy ultimately; such as drugs, alcohol, sex, social relationships, entertainment, and even 'religion'.

We've found that only an intimate relationship with God, made available through Jesus, will fulfill us perfectly. In a sense, we've come to the end of our ropes and found ourselves to be 'desperate'. As a matter of fact, the word 'desperation' is an anagram for "a rope ends it". We just won't settle for 'church-as-usual' any longer, we've been ruined for nothing less than loving Him with everything we've got, and all that we are!

We desire to lay our lives down, pick up our cross daily, and be radically abandoned to the pursuit of leaning on, loving, and knowing Jesus, as we endeavor to bring Him the glory due His name. So with all that in mind, 'Desperation Church' just sort of fit. We pray you understand, and agree.
